Leg Swelling/Varicose Veins
Your Tulsa Vein Clinic

Venous Insufficiency

There are many different causes of leg swelling including blood clots, vein issues, heart problems, kidney problems, lymphedema, and medications to name a few.

When the muscles in your lower legs contract, they work like a pump to push blood back to the heart. There are also small valves in the veins that when functioning normally, they prevent blood from flowing backwards with gravity

What to expect at your Visit

  • On your initial visit to our Tulsa Oklahoma clinic one of our physicians will discuss your symptoms and perform a physical exam
  • Typically an ultrasound is then performed to assess how the blood is flowing in your veins
  • The first line of treatment is usually conservative management with compression stockings. This is typically required by your insurance

Vein Treatment

There are multiple ways to treat venous insufficiency and varicose veins. Treatment for vein disease can be performed by closing the veins with “glue” or heat based technologies such as lasers or radiofrequency ablation. The exact method of treatment will be tailored to your exact problem

  • Vein ablation- A small catheter is placed into the disease vein and is then wither closed with heat or small amounts of “glue.”
  • Sclerotherapy- A foam solution is injected into the diseased veins which irritates the lining of the vein and causes it to close off. This is typically reserved for smaller veins or varicose veins that remain after ablation
