Interventional Oncology
Leading the way in Interventional Oncology
What is Interventional oncology?
Interventional oncology is a subspecialty of interventional radiology focused on the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of cancer using image-guided procedures. These procedures target tumors directly, delivering therapies such as ablation, embolization, and targeted drug delivery while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
Symptoms
- Symptoms of cancer vary widely depending on the type and location of the tumor.
- Common symptoms may include unexplained weight loss, fatigue, pain, changes in bowel or bladder habits, persistent cough, lumps or masses, and abnormal bleeding or bruising.
- Specific symptoms may also manifest depending on the organs or systems affected by the cancer.
Risk Factors
- Risks associated with interventional oncology procedures can vary depending on the specific technique used and the patient’s overall health.
- Potential risks may include bleeding, infection, damage to nearby structures or organs, allergic reactions to contrast agents, and adverse effects related to anesthesia or sedation.
- There is also a risk of procedural failure or incomplete tumor treatment, necessitating additional interventions or alternative therapies.
Diagnosis
- Diagnosis of cancer typically involves a combination of imaging studies, laboratory tests, and tissue biopsies.
- Imaging modalities such as CT (computed tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), PET (positron emission tomography), and ultrasound may be used to visualize tumors, assess their size and location, and evaluate for metastases.
- Tissue biopsies are often performed to obtain samples of suspicious lesions for pathological analysis, which helps confirm the presence of cancer, determine its type and stage, and guide treatment decisions.
