Vascular Care & Interventional Radiology

What does a vascular specialist treat?

A vascular specialist diagnoses and treats conditions that affect your arteries, veins, and circulation. This includes problems like Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), varicose veins, blood clots (DVT), non-healing wounds, venous insufficiency, aneurysms, and many other disorders that impact blood flow. Their goal is to restore healthy circulation, reduce symptoms, and prevent serious complications, often using minimally invasive treatments.

What is an interventional radiologist?

An interventional radiologist (IR) is a physician specially trained to perform minimally invasive procedures using imaging guidance such as ultrasound, X-ray, or CT, to treat a wide range of vascular and non-vascular conditions. Instead of large incisions, IRs use tiny instruments and catheters inserted through a small pinhole in the skin, allowing for faster recovery, less pain, and lower risk.

How is an interventional radiologist different from a surgeon?

Both interventional radiologists and surgeons treat medical conditions, but they use different approaches. Interventional radiologists use imaging to guide catheters and instruments through the blood vessels, treating problems from the inside without major surgery. Surgeons perform open or laparoscopic operations that usually require larger incisions and longer recovery times.

What are image-guided procedures?

Image-guided procedures use ultrasound, fluoroscopy (X-ray), or CT scans to help the physician see inside the body without open surgery. This allows precise targeting of the problem area while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues. Image-guided treatments are typically quicker, safer, and require much less recovery time than traditional surgery.

What is embolization?

Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny particles or coils to block abnormal or unwanted blood flow within a blood vessel. By closing off the targeted vessel, embolization can shrink tumors, stop bleeding, reduce pain, improve circulation, or treat conditions such as enlarged prostate, fibroids, and joint inflammation. It is done through a tiny catheter, requires no large incisions, and is performed under image guidance to ensure accuracy and safety.

Appointments & Patient Experience

Do I need a referral to be seen at Apex Vascular?

In most cases, you do not need a referral to schedule an appointment at Apex Vascular. Many patients come to us directly when they’re experiencing symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, poor circulation, or concerns about vascular health.

However, some insurance plans may require a referral for certain evaluations or procedures. If you’re unsure, our team is happy to check your benefits and guide you through the process.

What should I expect during my consultation?

During your consultation, you’ll meet with one of our vascular specialists to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any previous imaging or test results. Your visit typically includes:

  • A detailed review of your concerns
  • A physical exam focused on circulation and vascular health
  • On-site diagnostic testing if needed (such as ultrasound or ABI)
  • A clear explanation of your diagnosis
  • Personalized treatment recommendations based on your goals and lifestyle

We encourage you to ask questions—our team is here to help you understand your condition and feel confident about your care plan.

Procedures

How long do procedures typically take?

Most minimally invasive vascular procedures take 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the treatment. Because these procedures are done through a tiny pinhole rather than a surgical incision, they can be completed quickly and comfortably in our outpatient setting.

Are the procedures painful?

Most patients experience little to no pain during their procedure. We use local anesthesia to numb the area. Patients often describe the experience as pressure or mild discomfort rather than pain. After the procedure, most people feel only minor soreness that improves within a day or two.

Will I be awake during the procedure?

Yes. Most minimally invasive vascular procedures are performed using local anesthesia, which numbs the area while allowing you to stay awake and comfortable. This approach is safer, easier on your body, and allows for a much faster recovery. Most patients say they feel calm throughout the procedure and are surprised by how minimal the discomfort is.

How long is the recovery time?

Recovery is usually quick and easy. Most patients go home the same day and resume normal, non-strenuous activities within 24–48 hours. Because there are no large incisions or stitches, healing time is significantly shorter than with traditional surgery.

When can I return to work or normal activities?

Many patients return to work the next day, especially for jobs that do not require heavy physical activity. Light walking is encouraged, but strenuous exercise, lifting, or vigorous activity may be restricted for a few days depending on the specific procedure. Your provider will give you personalized guidance.

Are procedures covered by insurance?

Yes. Most vascular and embolization procedures are covered by major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, as long as they are medically necessary. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and will help you understand any copays, deductibles, or requirements such as prior authorization.

How effective are embolization procedures?

Embolization is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment used worldwide for a wide range of vascular conditions. Success rates are very high, with many patients experiencing significant symptom relief, improved function, and long-lasting results. Because embolization targets the problem at its source and avoids major surgery, complication rates are low and recovery is much faster.
